  • With Stendhal Gallery, Los Angeles, California, 1971.

    Footnote:
Born and raised on his family's Sunny Slope estate, Pasadena, California, Guy Orlando Rose would ultimately return to the San Gabriel Valley in 1914 and and remain there until his death in 1925. Rose began his early artistic education in San Francisco and later traveled to Paris in 1888 and enrolled at the Académie Julian, where he would study for three years. He lived in France for twelve years, spending much of his time in Giverny where he was heavily influenced by friend and mentor Claude Monet, who resided there at the time and was closely acquainted with other American artists Alson Clark, Frederick Frieseke and Richard E. Miller.

After his return to Southern California, Rose embraced the local landscape and its subtle yet majestic qualities which reminded him of the Giverny countryside. By the time of his 1916 exhibition at the Los Angeles Museum, Rose's reputation as an Impressionist painter was well established.

The sweeping vista of the valley in View from Arroyo Terrace, Pasadena, with its broad, verdant orange groves interspersed with palm trees against the looming backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains captures a moment in time and the grandeur of the landscape Rose knew so well. The palms dwarfed by the mountains illustrate the scope and scale of the scene. The viewer can sense the cottony clouds passing overhead, created by gentle taps of the brush, while their cast shadows glide gently over the mountains. The palm branches, painted with confident strokes, rustle in the breeze with dappled yellow highlights of sun across the trees on the valley floor.
